Tesla Coil Shows

Back by popular demand, it’s the hair-raising Tesla Coil Show! Discover how a Tesla coil can be transformed into a musical instrument in this live show that explores the science of electricity and celebrates the innovative mind of Nikola Tesla and his Tesla coil. Explore the different types of electricity and delve into the history of the “current wars” between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. You won’t want to miss this shockingly exciting experience!

Keynote Speaker Kate Edwards

Gain invaluable insight from Otronicon Keynote Speaker, Kate Edwards, in her presentation, “Career Paths to Game Creation” on Saturday, January 18. Discover how you can become a part of the growing global face of game creation regardless of your background. Edwards has been named one of Fortune Magazine’s “10 most powerful women in gaming” and has consulted on many projects for leading companies such as BioWare, Ubisoft, LEGO, and Facebook. After her presentation, engage in a Q&A session to learn personally from this visionary.


Drone Experiences

Then explore drone technology and try to master flying these amazing machines in a drone cage! Work together in groups and test flight skills by flying drones through a series of obstacles set-up in our mobile flight cage. On Saturday, watch as the USF College of Engineering control drones with their minds using a brain-computer interface.  


Speakers & Workshops

Learn from the innovators and trailblazers throughout our Central Florida community with workshops and speaker talks at Otronicon! From creating your own bioluminescent 3D printed organism to learning about the business of making games, you’ll leave these workshops and speaker talks with a newfound skill and appreciation for STEM. 


Squishy Circuits with Pikachu in Dr. Dare’s Laboratory 

Harness the powers of electric Pokemon as you make and test your own conductive dough to learn about the science of electricity with the help of Pikachu!


Schedule of Events

The Tesla Coil Show will be presented throughout Otronicon. Attendees of adults-only Science Night Live will be able to experience the show that evening but will need a separate ticket for the event.


Kate Edwards will present at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 18.


Drone programming will be available on the SunTrust Terrace from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on all four days of Otronicon.

Today, game creation tools are powerful and free, and more people are using games as a form of self-expression. About Our Keynote: 

Kate Edwards is the Executive Director of the Global Game Jam, as well as the CEO and principal consultant of Geogrify, a consultancy which pioneered content culturalization. She is also a Board Member of Take This and is the former Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) from 2012 to 2017. In addition to being an award-winning advocate who serves in several advisory roles, she is a geographer, writer, and corporate strategist.
Following 13 years at Microsoft, she has consulted on many game and non-game projects for BioWare, Google, Amazon, Facebook, LEGO, and many other companies. Fortune magazine named her as one of the "10 most powerful women" in the game industry in 2013 and in 2014 was named by as one of their six People of the Year. In 2018, she was honored with Reboot Develop’s annual Hero Award and also presented with IndieCade’s annual Game Changer Award, and in 2019 she was presented with a Special Award from GameRome for her ongoing service to the global game industry. She is also profiled in the December 2018 publication Women in Gaming: 100 Professionals of Play.
