Catalyst Scholars

Catalyst Scholars dedicate multiple semesters of service to Orlando Science Center while working on STEM projects which utilize their critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills.

Scholars have the opportunity to understand how Orlando Science Center meets our mission to inspire science learning for life by working closely with staff members and industry professionals.

The inaugural year welcomed the Catalyst Pritchard Scholars into the NatureWorks exhibit. The Catalyst Pritchard Scholars were dedicated to conservation education, learning about the diverse animals and habitats of Florida’s native and invasive species, while providing hands-on learning opportunities for Orlando Science Center visitors.

How will you use what you learned in the program to help further your educational or career goals?

I have learned that communication is key! Whether it’s an animal communicating to the keeper, the keepers communicating with each other, or even the environmental scientists communicating to politicians writing policies. It’s important to build skills around how we communicate and relate to each other.

Do you have any recommendations to future Catalyst Scholars?

Do not be afraid to take every opportunity given to you. Be an opportunist!

Why did you join the scholars program?

After volunteering for two years and experiencing the best summer of my life interning at the Science Center, I knew I wanted to continue my progression at OSC! A weekend doesn’t feel complete without a day spent at Orlando Science Center.

How will you use what you learned in the program to help further your educational or career goals?

This experience has been similar to a job. I’ve become more comfortable in situations where I don’t know what to do, asking for help when necessary, and understanding how to connect the importance of conservation to my future goals in college. I plan to use all the things I’ve learned when I attend Wake Forest University this year!
