This summer, Orlando Science Center is open until 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through August 10! Since these hours are a little late, the team in The Hive: A Makerspace presented by The Isaacs Family has put together some amazing adult-friendly workshops for all of you kids at heart.
If you’ve got the fever for arts and crafts, the only prescription is more making! Fuel your creativity with specially crafted makerspace workshops — perfect for a unique date night or family bonding. From sashiko embroidery to DIY Mouse Ears, each weekend of Science After Sundown offers an engaging and exciting new workshop for you to participate in!
The following workshops are limited seating. Please arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to queue for tickets, which will be passed out on a first come, first served basis.
All workshops, except for Sashiko Embroidery will be held at 8:00 and 9:30 p.m.
July 5 and 6: DIY Mouse Ear Headband
Why buy when you can DIY? Skip the long lines at the theme parks and make your own DIY Mouse Ear Headband in The Hive. Create your mousy masterpiece using flowers, 3D printed parts, fabric and more!
July 12 and 13: Block Printing
Leave an impression on your date with our Block Printing workshop! Learn how to carve a rubber stamp and print on paper or fabric! Must be 13 or older to participate in this workshop.
July 19 and 20: Sashiko Embroidery
The sashiko sewing method originated in ancient Japan as a way to combine decorative technique with mending and quilting. Bring your worn and torn denim for a workshop on how to mend, patch, and embellish your clothes with Japanese sashiko embroidery. This is an open make, so stop in anytime beginning at 8:00 p.m.!
July 26 and 27: Upcycled Self-Watering Planter
If you have a habit of forgetting to water your plants, this workshop will be a lifesaver…literally. Learn how to turn a plastic tote, 5 gallon bucket, or leftover large plastic container into a self-watering planter for small space vegetable gardening. Your veggies will thank you!
*Supplies are limited so we encourage you to bring your own bin to ensure you'll get to participate! Plastic materials that would work are large detergent containers, one gallon jugs, 2-liter soda bottles, cat litter containers, and large buckets!
August 2 and 3: Test Tube Propagation Station
Create your own miniature jungle with this unbeleafably fun workshop! Learn basic woodworking skills by making a test tube propagation station to root your plant cutting. Plant propagation may sound complicated, but simply put, it’s an easy way to create new plants from existing ones. Must be 13 or older to participate in this workshop.
August 9 and 10: TBD
Workshops are included with admission to Orlando Science Center, which is free for members, $21 for adults, $19 for seniors and students, and $15 for youth (ages 3 – 11).
