These positions range anywhere from handling animals, providing exhibit interpretation and developing educational content to working in guest services, coordinating events, or maintaining our building behind the scenes.

The Education Specialist: Curriculum and Instruction project manages special projects relating to PreK-12 education programs and educator professional development. They are responsible for leading and developing all PreK-12 STEM curricula for the Education Department including workshops, educator professional development, family programs, conference presentations and camps. The daily functions of this position consist of but are not limited to engaging and educating PreK-12 students, educators and their caregivers about STEM and various sciences with the use of age appropriate, inquiry based, hands-on activities in an informal setting. In addition, they will deliver educational content in one of the following ways: hands-on workshops, educator professional development, and family programming both on and off museum grounds.

Essential Functions: 

  • Performs the function of project manager for assigned special projects relating to PreK-12 education and out-of-school time learning.  
  • Works in conjunction with the Director of Education Initiatives to foster relationships with external partners, develop timelines and contracts as needed to ensure completion of all grant and sponsor deliverables for assigned projects.  
  • Works in conjunction with Director of Education Initiatives to develop all PreK-12 science curricula for the Education Department including workshops, educator professional development, family programs, conference presentations, and camps.  
  • Delivers education programing in accordance with the STEM Discovery Center’s brand and values to engage students, educators and their caregivers in high-quality hands-on activities and instruction.  
  • Creates and delivers education staff trainings for education programs and pedagogy.  
  • Completes routine education staff program evaluations and provides coaching and feedback.    
  • Ensures all programs are developmentally appropriate and align with Florida State Standards as required.  
  • Creates assessments, pre and post tools, and evaluations as required for reporting requirements.   
  • Monitors quality control for all education curricula and updates existing programs and content as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Exhibit Technology Specialist is responsible for the maintenance, research, and integration of electronics, audio/video, PC hardware and software for Orlando Science Center’s exhibits departments. This position has a 60/40 split between maintaining and improving current exhibits and the research and development of new exhibitry. This position supports building written procedures on exhibit maintenance as well as builds troubleshooting procedures, provides improvements to existing exhibits, and contributes to the design of new exhibits and their visitor interface.

Essential Functions: 

  • Assists exhibit technicians with repairs and serves as a knowledge base for the teams.
  • Demonstrates expertise in software and hardware computer systems including Windows (XP – 12), OS X (v10.3 – 10.15), Linux.
  • Identifies and diagnoses chronic or systemic technology defects in individual exhibits which reduces their efficiency and reliability or compromises the intended function. Provides and/or implements solutions.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and equipment used in development and programming of microcontrollers, PC’s, show controllers and audio/video equipment, along with a working knowledge of various programming languages such as Python or Arduino.
  • Assists with audio/visual needs associated with exhibits, live programming, and special events.
  • Assists with the development of new exhibits & grant projects by making recommendations to the safe, efficient, and effective use of technology.
  • Develops custom software for a variety of microcontrollers, PC, and specialty show control systems.
  • Documents all wiring diagrams, code and electronic components utilized in new exhibits.

We are seeking an energetic, organized, and community-focused individual to lead our Community Engagement programming. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with local, STEM (Science, Technology, Match and Engineering) focused organizations to exhibit at Orlando Science Center to share their expertise and showcase what they do. This position will be responsible for bringing in local community partners like Black Bee Honey, Orange County Library System and 4Roots Farm to exhibit with hands-on activities for OSC events and school break days. This position is also responsible for the coordination and creation of the daily schedule and acts as the lead media representative for marketing opportunities. Full-time, benefited position.

Essential Functions: 

  • Independently develop and deliver grant funded opportunities for the Programming department.  
  • Has working knowledge of STEM Spaces and programming for support in training and evaluating staff and programs in conjunction with the Manager of Programs. Supports programming as needed.  
  • Leads the efforts of monthly event planning for Community Partners including Community Partner Showcase Days and monthly events.  
  • Communicates, recruits, and organizes community content partners for monthly events across Visitor Experience including creation of work orders, building layouts, and communication with both internal and external partners. These partners should focus on STEM education in some way and reflect the diversity of our community. Building and maintaining lasting partnerships with local educational organizations is key to this role.

The Theater Technician & Projectionist is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of both projection systems, audio-video engineering, electronics, lighting, and other related subjects. They oversee the technical training in related fields and must ensure that standards for image and sound quality are met. They will assist the Technical Director of Theater Operations in signage and building the theater schedule.

Essential Functions:

  • Operates both 15/70 film and digital cinema projection systems and their associated equipment. 
  • Repairs audio/visual equipment - able to perform basic service and repair, and operates a wide range of electrical, computer, electronic, and optical equipment. 
  • Maintains the cleanliness of projection equipment, projection booth, and theater office areas. 
  • Keeps accurate records of equipment readings and film passes. 
  • Inputs show attendance data to database and reports demographic and film royalty information. 
  • Advises on the requisitions of parts, supplies and materials when needed. 
  • Regularly inspects equipment and performs maintenance tasks and repairs as needed. 
  • Works closely with Technical Director of Theater Operations along with contracted service personnel on troubleshooting and repair of equipment in a timely fashion. 
  • Trains and updates projection employees on all projection standards and procedures. 
  • Ingests digital film content and keys, builds show playlists for digital projection system, and prepares new film prints to be run. 
  • Supports Manager on building theater film schedule and keeps track of theater usage for unique events. 
  • Operates, maintains, and trains projectionist on live audiovisual equipment for unique events in the theaters.  
  • Fulfills the role of Theater Operator and Queue Operator as needed.  
  • Provides an important level of customer service to all OSC (Orlando Science Center) visitors and employees. 
  • Performs light administrative tasks and other related duties as assigned. 
  • Fills in for on call needs to cover projectionist needs, equipment failures and emergencies. 
  • Ensures Theater staff positions are covered and conducts pre-shift meeting for theater operations when Technical Director of Theater Operations is not onsite.

The VPK Preschool Teacher is responsible for the general supervision and management of a class of preschool (4-5 years old) children, planning and executing the Early Childhood education program in accordance with the goals, objectives and standards set forth by the Orlando Science Center Preschool in alliance with Early Childhood developmentally appropriate practices, FL Department of Children and Families licensing requirements, Teaching Strategies “Creative Curriculum”, NAEYC and Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) standards and guidelines. The VPK Preschool Teacher is also responsible for instructing children (4-5 years old) in activities designed to promote social/emotional, physical and intellectual growth needed to be successful individuals related to their peer group, environment and community.

Essential Functions: 

  • Embraces STEM education and informal teaching methodologies and strategies as essential functions of the Science Center Preschool and curriculum approach. 
  • Establishes clear objectives for lessons, units, themes, activities and projects and communicate (written and verbal) to children Demonstrate commitment to OSC’s vision, mission, guiding principles and values. 
  • Organizes and directs activities/materials to promote physical, mental, social development such as games, art, music/movement, storytelling.  
  • Arranges indoor and outdoor environment to facilitate creative play, motor development and safety.   
  • Maintains the safety and health standards of the classroom and outdoor environment through cleaning, visual and personal inspection. 
  • Provides variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning and imaginative play.   
  • Prepares materials and classroom for activities.  Organizes and labels materials and a child’s work that is age appropriate and perceptual skills. 
  • Uses literacy, science, technology, engineering, math and motor development for individual, small and large group activities to provide children opportunities to observe, question and investigate. 
  • Establishes and maintains rules of behavior and procedures in regards to class control.  Greets all arriving and departing children and parents/guardian.  Open communication (verbal and written) with children, families, Director and Preschool staff. 
  • Observes and evaluates a child’s performance, behavior, social development and physical health to be discussed with Director, parents/guardian and other childhood resources to help in providing the best methods of learning for the child.  Daily, weekly and monthly Preschool and VPK assessments will be conducted in accordance with guideline and standards.

  • Education: A degree (Associate or above) in Child Development, Early Childhood, PreKindergarten – Primary, or Elementary education, Exceptional Student Education, Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC), Early Childhood Professional Certificate (ECPC), Florida Department of Education Child Care Apprenticeship Certificate (CCAC), certified National CDA is required.

FL DCF staff credential, CR and Basic First Aid Certification; 45 hours DCF mandated child care courses (provide a current DCF transcript); Clear Level 2 Background screening.  May not be on site until this is established.; Four year old standards.; Emergent Literacy for VPK.

We are seeking a friendly, positive individual to support quality play and learning experiences for the Science Center’s youngest learners. The KidsTown Content Specialist is responsible for guiding the creation of developmentally appropriate content for children ages 0-7 and their families, the presentation of this content on the exhibit floor, and the training of staff to deliver this content using early childhood and museum learning best practices. This position is responsible for special projects within the KidsTown team, including grant-funded projects and media opportunities. This role is expected to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision and demonstrate excellent customer service skills. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Works with a high degree of independence on multiple projects in parallel.  
  • Engages comfortably with young children and their accompanying adults and demonstrates a high level of proficiency in all KidsTown interactions, activities, and programs.  
  • Works with the Manager of KidsTown to deliver grant funded and special projects as they are assigned. Researches, develops, leads, and trains the team on developmentally appropriate content that satisfies the requirements relevant to each special project.  
  • Provides tracking and documentation support for any special projects assigned to another KidsTown staff member, based on department needs.

Seasonal facilitators are primarily responsible for facilitating Orlando Science Center’s exhibit halls by answering questions, narrating on the microphone, leading activities and being interactive and engaging. This individual should passionately embrace and communicate the mission of Orlando Science Center – “Inspire Science Learning for Life” to Science Center guests. Seasonal facilitators will be responsible for delivering exemplary customer service and be able to effectively communicate science concepts and topics through science demonstrations and activities. Ideal candidates will be comfortable working with diverse audiences and passionate about working with children ages 6-12.  

 

Essential Functions: 

  • The candidate should be comfortable approaching guests and speaking in front of a large audience. 
  • Comfortable with discussing all branches of science. 
  • Comfortable with being on stage, being on camera, chemicals, laboratory equipment, and wearing costumes.
  • Standing/walking for long periods of time. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Education:  High School diploma or equivalent.  
  • Experience & Certifications & Certifications: N/A 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience working in museums or in an informal education setting is preferred.   
  • Experience performing improv and/or theater background is preferred.
