The Florida Academy of Sciences represents all branches and levels of science in Florida and advocates for and supports scientific development in the state and in the education of its citizens.

The Florida Academy of Sciences (FAS) has its office headquarters here at Orlando Science Center. The Academy was founded in 1936 and is one of 44 state academies of science in the U.S. FAS is the Florida Affiliate of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Academy represents all branches and levels of science in Florida and advocates for and supports scientific development in the state and in the education of its citizens.

The Academy has 14 subsections representing various scientific disciplines (e.g. Biological Sciences, Medical Sciences, Physics and Space Sciences, etc.). The membership of the Academy encompasses scientists and engineers in academia and industry.

FAS publishes a quarterly journal, Florida Scientist, which contains research findings and papers from scientists and is distributed to libraries through out Florida, the U.S. and some 30 foreign countries. FAS also supports and hosts the Florida Junior Academy of Science which focuses on secondary school students studying science and preparing for higher education in the scientific fields.

The Academy is strongly committed to increasing the public understand and awareness of science in Florida and its members support the Orlando Science Center with expertise and input when needed. FAS advocates for rigorous science in education and provides input to policy makers at the state level in formulating science curricula and policies.

Membership in the Academy is open not only to professionals, but to members of the general public who are interested and concerned about science and wish to support and encourage science in the state of Florida.
