Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22 and we’ll definitely be celebrating! Enjoy this quick and easy activity that makes a new use out of an old T-shirt. The finished product is an eco-friendly tote bag that you can use for groceries, school supplies and more!

Supplies
  • T-Shirt
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Straight Edge (i.e. ruler)

Step 1

Decide whether your shirt will be right-side out or inside out, and whether the fringe will be on the inside or outside.

Step 2

Cut off the collar/neckline along its seams.

Step 3

Cut off the collar/neckline along its seams.

Step 4

Decide how tall you want your bag to be, and draw a line across the shirt to mark the bottom of the bag.

Step 5

Cut along the shirt’s side fold to your line to separate the front from the back. Then cut equal vertical strips through both layers from the bottom of the shirt to your line.

Step 6

Tie together each set of front and back strips. If you want the fringe to be hidden on the inside, turn the shirt inside out before tying the fringe.

Step 7

Starting from the leftmost knot, tie one strip from the knot on the left to the knot on its right. Eventually each knot but the first and last will be tied to the knots on either side.

Step 8

If you chose for your fringe to be on the outside, you’re done! If you chose for it to be on the inside, flip inside out.
