Calling all incoming 8th and 9th grade students from Orange and Osceola Counties!
Valencia College and Orlando Science Center have received a grant from the Department of Transportation to host a two week Summer Transportation Institute! The program is a unique opportunity and is focused on sparking interest in careers in transportation among middle school students in Central Florida. It will take place Monday – Friday, July 11–22, 2016.
There is no direct cost to the family but the parents must commit to dropping off and picking up their student each day at the Valencia Campus on Kirkman Road. This 2016 Summer Transportation Institute at Valencia College will include variety of learning experiences and field trips to places such as Orlando Science Center, Universal Studios, Walt Disney World, and Orlando International Airport. From rollercoasters to SunRail, participants will have an opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and challenges to learn firsthand about the transportation systems that make moving around Central Florida more efficient. Additionally they will have an opportunity to meet with the engineers and professionals who work in the diverse field of transportation.
In addition to the reinforcement of academic skills, students will be introduced to: Leadership Development, College Preparedness, and Workforce Readiness. Students will also participate in enrichment and enhancement content throughout the program including:
Students will enhance their existing computer skills with instruction in CAD software and basic robotics programming.
Through academic content, students’ academic skills will improve throughout the program. Pre and Post testing will assess the degree of improvement in core academic areas.
By working in small groups during hands-on projects, students will learn basic leadership and team working skills.
Soft skills training provided by our Internship and Workforce services team will help prepare students to learn the basics of applying for a job. In addition to resume and interview skills, basic etiquette lessons will be interspersed throughout the program.
After meeting with Valencia’s Career Program Advisors, students will have a better understanding of the academic rigor of college courses. Additionally, after the successful completion of the program, students will receive 3 elective college credits through the Career Pathways program. Upon enrollment at Valencia, the credits will activate and move students’ one step closer to college completion.
Students will receive hands-on training in basic first aid and CPR as part of their unit in Transportation Safety. Training will be provided by a highly credentialed Valencia team and, upon the completion of the training and the camp, the participating students will receive the First Aid certificate of completion and a First Aid Card.
- Complete the 2016 Summer Transportation Institute Application.

- Letter of intent written by the student.
- Letter of commitment written by parent.
- Letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor.
