As of January 31 2009, 49 percent of the total pounds of fresh or frozen seafood sold at Walmart U.S. have certifications from the Marine Stewardship Council or Aquaculture Certification Council.

Walmart currently has:

  • 28 products and counting in our stores that carry the MSC certification
  • 100 percent of the farmed shrimp products purchased meet factory processing criteria established by the Aquaculture Certification Council
  • Additional shrimp catfish, tilapia and salmon farms becoming ACC-certified

In 2008, Walmart committed to reduce the weight of its global plastic shopping bag waste at its stores around the world by an average of 33 percent per store.

This commitment could eliminate:

  • Approximately 135 million pounds of plastic shopping bag waste globally
  • Avoid the production of approximately 290,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases
  • Prevent consuming the equivalent of 678,000 barrels of oil every year

ORLANDO, FL - October 08, 2010 - Join the Green Revolution at Orlando Science Center on Saturday, October 16. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., exhibits, seminars, workshops, speakers, films and more will highlight the fast-developing world of clean, renewable energy, recycling and energy efficient technology. Activities and displays on the various levels of the Science Center will help educate and provide examples of alternative behaviors and resources to live a “greener” life. Greenovations is presented by OUC - The Reliable One with support from many community partners.

If you've been by the Science Center lately, you've seen that SUBWAY™ is our new Cafe partner. You might not have known how environmentally focused they are. Here are some of the things Subway has implemented in our restaurants to be more environmentally friendly courtesy of Julie Farr from DiPasqua Enterprises, our SUBWAY™ franchisee:
  • The first SUBWAY™ Eco-Store opened November 9, 2007 in Kissimmee, FL. (Two more have since opened in Oregon and more are in various design stages).
  • Since August 2006, SUBWAY™ restaurants with low-flow sink aerators have saved 41 million gallons of water annually.
  • Only 100% hormone free milk is served at SUBWAY™ restaurants.

We opened three exhibits in one day! Check out the pictures from our Members only preview!

Members of the Orlando Science Center were invited to a special opening of the Science Center’s newest exhibits, Charlie and Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure, Get the Message and Our Planet, Our Universe.

From 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. we held an exclusive preview for our members to get a glimpse of our two new travelling exhibits, ‘Get the Message’ and ‘Charlie & Kiwi’. Attendees were able to explore the fascinating realm of verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as discover evidence of evolutionary connections between dinosaurs and birds. Members were also able to get a first peek at our new permanent exhibit, ‘Our Planet, Our Universe’, which utilizes hands-on, interactive exhibits to provoke discovery about our planet and the cosmos. NASA and the Central Florida Astrological Society (CFAS) came out to provide entertainment, knowledge and to help inspire learning.  If you didn’t get a chance today, make sure you stop by for new discoveries!

Starting Friday, October 1 and running to Sunday, December 19, the Orlando Science Center will show Ultimate Wave: Tahiti on Fridays and Sundays at 4 p.m. and Sharks on Saturday at 4 p.m. for only $10. This ticket will allow guests access to only the film, exhibits and science demonstrations are not included, and will be available for purchase after 3:30 p.m. on those days.

Don’t have time to commit to a full day of exhibit exploration, then come just for a film! Directed by Stephen Low, one of the industry’s foremost filmmakers, The Ultimate Wave Tahiti follows world champion surfer Kelly Slater’s quest to find the perfect wave.  Taking viewers on a journey to the scenic beaches of Tahiti, the film simultaneously exemplifies the contrasting concepts of surfing as a competitive sport and an ancient Polynesian wave-riding art.

With The Ultimate Wave Tahiti, Low’s filmmaking uses leading science expertise and the hands-on surf expertise of Kelly Slater to interpret related ocean science and serve a broader, multi-generational audience. Together with science and education elements developed in consultation with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists and educators, this film is geared to making a big splash with adventure-seeking giant screen audiences. See this film on Fridays and Sundays at 4 p.m.

Presented by Jean-Michel Cousteau, SHARKS is a breathtaking new IMAX theatre film experience that offers audiences an astonishing up-close encounter with the Lions and Tigers of the Ocean. Come face-to-face with a multitude of shark species, including the Great White, Hammerhead, and Whale Shark. Witness sharks as they really are: not wicked man-eating creatures, but wild, fascinating and endangered animals that have been in existence since a million years before dinosaurs roamed the earth. See this film on Saturdays at 4 p.m.

Premiering September 25 with Our Planet, Our Universe

Orlando, FL - September 17, 2010 - The Orlando Science Center and WFTV Channel 9 have partnered together to create the Severe Weather Center 9 interactive exhibit experience. This exhibit, presented by WFTV Channel 9, is a replica of the station’s weather center that is seen on television. Interactive multimedia presentations featuring WFTV’s Chief Meteorologist, Tom Terry, and the Channel 9 weather team explore the skills and technology at work to predict severe storms.

“We are excited to bring this exhibit to life,” commented WFTV Vice President and General Manager Shawn Bartelt.  “Our entire weather team has contributed to the content that includes everything from weather basics to how to become a meteorologist and even offers the visitor an opportunity to create their own weather forecast and deliver the weather on OSC TV for other visitors to see,” she continued.

This interactive weather display will be a featured component of Our Planet, Our Universe, which is an original exhibit on astronomy and earth science, developed by the Orlando Science Center. New interactive experiences from planetary rovers to black holes lets visitors explore such themes as Earth Wind and Sky, Planets and Portals, and Gravity, Waves and Warps. Together with returning favorites such as Science on a Sphere, the Hurricane Simulator, Make a Tornado, and Gravity Well, visitors will discover the dynamic forces that shape our planet, and our universe.

“WFTV Channel 9 has enabled us to engage people in scientific exploration by using the very relevant topic of our community’s weather,” said Science Center President and CEO, JoAnn Newman. “We all have a vested interest in meteorology. It’s a science that has a direct impact on our lives every day.”
