Most people look at the Science Center as a fun and educational place to go on a Saturday afternoon...

What they might not realize is that we’re also trusted partners to the school systems of the areas we serve. Our educational programs supplement traditional classroom learning with a valuable informal education and serve to build on the foundation of knowledge kids gain in school. Most importantly, they further the mission of increasing competency in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) competency.

These activities enhance classroom experience and provide students with a different way of looking at science, math and technology.

These photos are from a workshop held at Lake Como Elementary School as part of the OUC AWESOME Project. Students worked in teams to design and build green roofs. In order for their green roof to be deemed a success, they had to lower the internal temperature of the apartment building, ensure it was leak-free and gather some of the rainfall into a cistern. Students worked within a budget to buy the materials for their creation.

The OUC AWESOME Project is a five-year initiative that is a partnership between Orlando Utilities Commission and Orlando Science Center. This initiative allows the Science Center to reach every fifth grader in OUC’s service territory with messages surrounding water efficiency and renewable energies. This year, the Science Center upgraded the program to incorporate STEM and 21st-century learning skills.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, Orlando Science Center hosted 26 elementary school teachers from Orange, Lake and Seminole counties as well as two engineers for Engineering is Elementary training sponsored by Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division. Training was centered around the EiE unit "A Stick in the Mud: Evaluating a Landscape."

Teachers engaged in hands-on, interactive STEM-based engineering design challenges. This particular unit highlights the field of geotechnical engineering and the challenge of designing a bridge along a river. Activities included core sampling, structural testing and the effects of erosion and compaction.

EiE was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston and aims to increase students' interest in and confidence about engineering. EiE's 20 units present fun, engaging engineering challenges that allow students to apply science knowledge.
