Take a Journey Along the World's Mightiest River

AMAZON premieres on February 20 during a South American-Themed Cocktails & Cosmos event

ORLANDO, FL - (February 2, 2010) - Take a journey along the world’s mightiest river when Amazon comes to the giant screen at the Orlando Science Center. Witness a breathtaking world of beauty and mystique along a body of water that is considered the lifeblood for whole civilizations. The film will premiere during a Cocktails & Cosmos social event on Saturday, February 20, 2010. After its premiere, Amazon will screen daily in the Dr. Phillips CineDome through Summer 2010.

Filmed by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Keith Merrill, this 40-minute giant screen adventure provides a glimpse into a world that has long been the obsession of explorers, scientists and anthropologists. The Amazon is home to more than 5,000 different species of fish and more than 60,000 different species of plants that live on its banks. Academy Award-winning actress Linda Hunt (The Year of Living Dangerously, NCIS: Los Angeles) narrates as you are guided through the mighty Amazon and come face to face with a vast and exotic collection of animals, including the jaguar, tapir, pipa toad and sloth.

The film takes you into the deepest crevasses of the Amazon, from its source high in the Andes Mountains down through rain forests across South America. Amazon profiles the unlikely pairing of American Enthnobotanist Dr. Mark Plotkin and Tribal Shaman Julio Mamani and their search for the medicinal qualities of native plants and animals. Their quest even takes them to encounters with the Zoes, an indigenous tribe, who contribute to ground-breaking research. The journey these two men undertake forms a bridge between western medical science and the magic of Indian Shamanism - an union which one day may help discover cures for diseases not yet conquered.

Amazon is presented by Ogden Entertainment and distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films (Everest, Hurriance on the Bayou). MacGillivray Freeman Films is one of the world’s largest independent producers and distributors of giant screen films. The film will premiere on Saturday, February 20 during a South-American themed Cocktails & Cosmos, featuring live entertainment and special presentations. From 6 to 10 p.m., guests will enjoy premiere screenings at 7 and 9 p.m. while experiencing one of the Science Center’s most exciting social events.

After the premiere, Amazon will have regular screenings in the Dr. Phillips CineDome. See the film with general admission to the Orlando Science Center, which is $17 for adults and $12 for kids (ages 3-11). This ticket also includes access to all the Science Center’s exhibits, like the new exhibits Frogs and Science in Toyland, as well as all other giant screen films on the schedule.
