This weekend is the 15th Annual Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition! Every day this week, we'll spotlight one of the five finalists.
Rikhav Shah is a sophomore at Lake Highland Preparatory School. Rikhav has been fortunate enough to conduct research at the NanoScience Technology Center at the University of Central Florida. For the past two years, he has been studying the possibilities of developing a nanoparticle-based probe for detection of heavy metal contaminants in drinking water.
Nanotechnology is the study and application of materials at a molecular level. Rikhav is interested in how a material’s properties can be taken advantage of at that scale to solve problems.
Last year, he presented his research and won awards at the Dr. Nelson Ying Orange County Science Exposition, Florida State Science & Engineering Fair, and Intel ISEF. This year, continuing his research, he was one of the grand prize winners at the county expo, and is looking forward to participating again at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair later this spring.
