While our society focuses on the successes of athletes and performers, our country’s future hinges on innovation in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Orlando Science Center is committed to supporting children and young adults in their scientific endeavors by providing competitions to showcase their accomplishments, allow them to gain access to mentors in the community, and aid them in their future academic and career goals.

Curtis Kinetic Science Competition

Motivating students to stretch the capacity of their unlimited imaginations, Orlando Science Center challenges students to transform ordinary and found objects into a kinetic system. Awards will be given based on problem-solving, best use of science and mechanical innovation.

Best in Fair winners receive a $500 prize for their school and a trophy! Prizes of $250 are also awarded to Best use of Science and Most Innovative, and to the winning school’s sponsoring teacher.

Science Challenge

Presented by Bright House Networks, the Science Challenge encourages excellence in science education and provides an intermediate event between the County Science Fairs and the State Science Fair. Middle and high-schoolers are invited by winning first place in the physical science competitions in county Science Fairs in the eight surrounding counties (Brevard [Intercoastal, Mainland, South], Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, and Volusia). With winners in each junior and senior category, the Best in Fair earns a $2,000 scholarship for college.

Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition

The Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition encourages students to help humanity through scientific research. High-schoolers submit research papers to be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges to select five finalists. Finalists are invited to participate in a three-day, expenses-paid event in April, concluded by an awards luncheon to announce the “Ying Prize” of $5,000 to the student, $1,000 to their teacher and $1,000 to their principal!
