Perfect for Your Little Ones

Melanie Turner is one of those people that can brighten up any room she walks into. She is the Early Childhood Interpreter here at the Orlando Science Center who adores her job and the kids she gets to work with. I have the privilege to get to know her a little better and learn about her experiences here at the Science Center.

Melanie started babysitting at the age of 11 where she found a natural love for working with kids. In her college years she volunteered at a preschool where she was able to get her hands on more of an educational aspect. During this time one of her friends told her about a summer camp with the Boy Scouts of America where parents are able to learn and do activities with their family while their young ones are being watched. She jumped on this opportunity and became the Small Fry Director (Preschool Director) at the camp for three years.

Melanie has been with the Orlando Science Center for almost two years now. She loves all of the hands on opportunities she gets to share with the kids. On of her favorite experiences here was Pirates Week. There are many workshops and events like Pirates Week that kids can take part of!

Melanie just hosted the Bee Mine Valentine’s Day Workshop. The workshop was filled will all sorts of fun games and activities. They talked about insects, different parts of a bee and even got to make edible love bugs! The kids were able to see real bees in Nature Works and even the queen bee came out to play along. Everyone seemed to be buzzing around in delight!

New Workshop

Melanie is currently getting ready for her next holiday workshop, “A Wee Leprechaun’s St. Patrick’s Day Workshop”. This workshop is full of nonstop exciting activities. Kids will learn about the science behind rainbows, make a Tie-dye pillowcase, cook rainbow toast and even create magic dust! I don’t know who is luckier, the leprechauns or the kids!

The workshop will take place Saturday, March 13th from 10:00am- 12:00pm.
