Frequently Asked Questions

When can a youth become a volunteer at the Science Center?

We accept applications for the Youth Volunteer Program at age 13.

How does the application process work?

To become an applicant, the Youth Volunteer Coordinator must first receive the following:

  1. A completed Volunteer Application signed by the prospective volunteer and by a parent/guardian
  2. A letter of recommendation from a teacher
  3. A copy of a recent report card showing at least a GPA of 2.5 or higher

After the volunteer application is received, the Youth Volunteer Coordinator will review the application and contact the volunteer to discuss volunteering interests and provide information on any upcoming orientations.

What type of commitment is expected from a Science Center volunteer?

Volunteering at the Science Center is a year-round open-ended commitment. We do ask that Youth Volunteers commit at least 6 months of service (during the school year) or to the specific requirements of a summer-only volunteer opportunity (available on the “Summer Volunteers” section of our website). We do our best to create schedules that are mutually beneficial to the Youth and the Science Center’s needs.

How many days per month can individuals volunteer?

During the school year, Youth Volunteers are required to complete one weekend (Saturday or Sunday) shift per month. During the summer, we have several programs with specific attendance requirements which are available on the “Summer Volunteers” section of our website.

How will a youth volunteer be placed?

Each applicant should familiarize themselves with our different Youth Volunteer opportunities on the “Youth Volunteers” section of our website prior to applying to be an Orlando Science Center volunteer. After discussing your interests with the Youth Volunteer Coordinator, Youth Volunteers will be placed accordingly. The needs of the organization will also be considered when determining where youth will volunteer.
