Our exhibits are designed to inspire curiosity and exploration, our Science Live! programs are designed to bring the exhibits to life. Whether it’s a show in the Darden Adventure Theater or a one-to-one interaction with a volunteer at the Crosby Observatory, our live programs create the kind of impact that can last a lifetime.

Storytime (10:30 am)
Curl up in KidsTown with a good book! Science Center staff bring a book and corresponding craft to KidsTown. We read the book and complete a craft together, talking about elements of the story as we go along. Depending on the nature of the craft, StoryTime may happen under the Story Tree or at the blue craft tables. Story books are changed out every other week. Craft time works best when children bring an adult.

This activity is best for guests 7 and under when accompanied by an adult. 


Vamonos! Let's Go! (12:30 - noon)
Young guests get to help a Science Center staff member solve a problem just like in the show. Focusing on active play, guests help the staff member by following a map to different sections of the exhibit, performing small tasks along the way.

This program is appropriate for guests age 7 and younger.

Messy Afternoons (1:30 pm)
Enjoy a messy activity in KidsTown. Activities are set up at the blue tables and involve exploring materials by using your sense of sight, hearing, touch, and even smell. Activities range from playing with home-made playdough to exploring the states of matter with oobleck.

These activities are best for guests age 7 and younger when accompanied by an adult.

Stack It (1:30 pm)
Engineering and imagination come together as Science Center staff provide bricks, blocks or even cups to stack in creative formations. Make sure to take a picture of your building before you go, as building materials are shared by all.

Earth Day (All Day)
Kidstown celebrates Earth Day! Look for the following activities to occur throughout the day:

·         Seed Bombs- This craft allows young guests to create a seed bomb, an object that is paced with native Florida wild flower seeds that you throw. This means that after a week or so, your ‘bomb’ grows into flowers!

·         Germinating Seed Necklaces- This is a craft that really grows on you! Young guests will make a necklace where the pendant is a place where a seed begins to grow.

Remember that once you make these amazing crafts, in order to see them grow you must keep them in the sunlight and moist!

These activities is best for guests age 7 and under when accompanied by an adult. 


Maker Workshop: Paper Making (11:30 am)
Celebrate Earth Day the Maker way! Science Center makers will be leading this workshop on how to make home-made paper from recycled pieces. As an added bonus, we’ll be embedding our paper with seeds from Florida native wildflowers. This means after you have enjoyed your paper, you don’t throw it away or recycle it, you plant it!

This workshop takes between 30-40 minutes to complete, depending on how creative you get.

The workshop is free with admission! Seating is first come, first serve.

This workshop is best for guests age 6 and older, with their adults.

Explore the surface of Mars using an amazing combination of virtual reality software and hardware. A head mounted display shows you actual surface features of Mars while the Virtusphere allows you to move around in the virtual landscape. In essence, you are the first person to walk on Mars! This ticketed experience is free with admission; simply sign up at the Base Command on level 4.  Guests wishing to participate in this experience must meet the following requirements:

·         Must be 8 years or older

·         Must weigh between 60lbs and 250 lbs.

·         Must be 52 inches or taller.

·         Must be able to follow verbal directions in English.

Kaboom! Show (1:15 pm)
Do you like fireworks? Are you a MythBusters fan? Then this is the show for you! During this 25 minute show, one of our specially trained OSC scientists will explore the nature of combustion and chemical changes. We start with little combustions and move our way up to loud explosions!

No tickets are need for this show. There are loud noises towards the end, guests are permitted to leave as necessary, and re-entry to the show is allowed. Latex balloons are also used in this show.

Put your brain to the test at the Wheel of Science! At this game show, contestants spin the wheel to determine their challenge, which could be anything from eating a bug, to sitting on a chair of nails, to answering a harmless science trivia question.

This activity is appropriate for guests age 6 and up.
