New Healthcare Exhibit Premieres on Saturday, April 17

ORLANDO, FL - (April 8, 2010) - Have you ever wondered what the everyday life of a nurse or doctor would be like? Or perhaps you just wanted some information on the variety of careers possible in the expanding healthcare industry. Careers for Life, premiering on Saturday, April 17 at the Orlando Science Center, was created to showcase the high demand careers dedicated to saving and helping the lives of others.

This new exhibit offers information and education presented in an interactive experience with a focus on opportunities within the growing healthcare field for everyone. Careers for Life is an addition to the Science Center’s collection of permanent exhibits. It forms the basis for a larger health and wellness exhibit, currently in development.

With help from WorkForce Central Florida and its affiliate, Partners for a Healthy Community, Careers for Life features actual nurses, therapists, and paramedics, filmed specifically for this interactive media display. Hands-on exhibits within Careers for Life use basic anatomical displays to enhance the career information further. The exhibit doesn’t only spotlight doctors and nurses, but a number of occupations, including respiratory therapy and EMTs.

A key message of the exhibit is teamwork because today’s health care professionals depend upon seamless cooperation to bring a patient from sickness to wellness.  To tell this story, Careers for Life features a short film, shot in collaboration with OSC’s health care partners, that uses the real-life scenario of a stroke to illustrate the teamwork so essential to healthcare today.

Careers for Life is the first phase of a health and wellness exhibit hall for the Orlando Science Center. The full exhibit, entitled A Healthy You, is planned to occupy 4,000 square feet and focus on healthcare and its impact on everyday life with topics ranging from nutrition to lifestyle choices to career opportunities. It’s will have broad appeal with content focused on all ages, from students on field trips to adults looking for career information.

The Careers for Life and A Healthy You are part of the Orlando Science Center's support of STEM education, which emphasizes education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The Careers for Life exhibit is funded by a grant from the US Department of Labor, in partnership with Seminole State College and supported by in-kind contributions and assistance from WorkForce Central Florida and the Partners for a Healthy Community. The exhibit was designed and fabricated by the FX Design Group.

Careers for Life premieres on Saturday, April 17, during Mission: Nutrition III, an annual event at the Orlando Science Center focused on wellness and the promotion of healthcare careers. This year, the event will also focus on advancements in medical technology, especially simulation. Partners with the event include Workforce Central Florida, the American Chemical Society, the American Red Cross, Young Chef’s Academy, and Lerner Chiropractic Center. Guests can explore Careers for Life as well as see displays and demonstrations and participate in free health screenings from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
