16 Orlando Science Center Events to Look Forward to in 2016!

This year Orlando Science Center hosted more than 500,000 visitors, the highest attendance rate since the new building opening in 1997! It also reached its first major milestone in its capital campaign, Unlock Science, which will pave the way for New KidsTown and continued renovations and upgrades in the years to come. It celebrated the 10th anniversary of Otronicon, Central Florida’s favorite interactive tech expo, the 5th annual Science of Wine event and so much more. While 2015 was an extremely eventful year for Orlando Science Center, we’re looking forward to some amazing events in 2016. Here is a peek at some of the exciting things you can join in on in the new year!

  1. Otronicon v.11

From January 15 – 18, 2016, Orlando Science Center celebrates STEM and inspires tomorrow’s workforce today! At Otronicon, guests walk on the cutting edge through state-of-the-art gaming and simulation technologies, including military and medical simulators not typically available to the public. Learn about STEM careers, experience the future of games and design, check out workshops and panels led by industry pros and more! Visit www.otronicon.org for more details.

  1. Wizard of Oz & Hands-On Harley Davidson Traveling Exhibits
    Coming late January 2016, these two traveling exhibits offer hands-on STEM experiences for our littlest learners! The Wizard of Oz is a journey of self-discovery for the whole family that will take you from Gale Farm to the colorful Land of Oz! In Hands-On Harley Davidson, children explore a pretend motorcycle dealership while learning about the people, places and processes that make a community work. It features two kid-sized motorcycles and opportunities to “Dream It!,” Build It!” and “Ride It!”
  2. STEM Day at the Capitol
    Orlando Science Center will take to the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee with fellow STEM partners to highlight how strategic partnerships fill the STEM talent pipeline! There will be experiments, flight simulators and more for state legislators to experience while discussing the importance of STEM education as it relates to growing Florida’s technological workforce.
  1. Monthly Themed Activities and Special Event Days
    Every month, Orlando Science Center celebrates a monthly theme with special activities and event days. At the beginning of the year, we’re looking forward to celebrating Technology Month, Heart Health Month and Messy Science Month! We will also be hosting fun events for Leap Day, Dr. Seuss Day, Pi Day, Earth Day and many more! Keep an eye on our Science Live! Schedule for details on upcoming events.
  2. National Parks and Other New Films!
    National Parks Adventure hits the Dr. Phillips CineDome on February 12, 2016, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service! In addition to this awe-inspiring film, we will host many new education films in our large-screen theater and the Digital Adventure Theater: A National Geographic Experience.
  3. Science Competitions

The Curtis Kinetic Science Challenge, Orlando Science Center Science Challenge, and Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition all support children and young adults in their scientific endeavors by allowing them to showcase their accomplishments, gain access to mentors in the community, and get aid for their future academic and career goals.   1. Science Night Live Events
    It’s Orlando Science Center reserved only for adults 21+ only at Science Night Live! An “adult swim” of the science variety, the event features all four floors of exhibits, films and hands-on programming aimed specifically for grown-ups, while enjoying adult food and beverages available for purchase. Join us for our next Science Night Live on February 20.
  2. Science Park Gets an Upgrade

From April 13 to April 27 Science Park located on Level 2 will be closed for renovations. When it reopens, prepare to be amazed by upgraded and new hands-on interactives and simulators that will inspire you to take a walk on the science side! Experience the science of motion, simulation, electricity and magnetism!

  1. Inspire Science Breakfast
    The annual Inspire Science Breakfast event is an opportunity to celebrate the Science Center’s role as a vital community resource that ignites the spark for tomorrow’s leaders in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The event will include several notable speakers and support Orlando Science Center’s vision is to be the community partner that fosters creativity and curiosity for STEM, which, in turn, stimulates the kind of innovation that transforms our economy and enhances lives.
  2. Science of Wine

Join us for a night of wine and gourmet food! The Science of Wine is a unique tasting event with an educational twist. More than 150 of the finest wines from all of the major regions of the world will be represented and paired with dishes from local gourmet restaurants and caterers.

  1. School Break Camps and Summer Camps

Give your kids a productive and fun way to spend their time off from school! Orlando Science Center’s school break programs and summer camps offer kids the chance to learn more about science and technology in an exciting, interactive environment! School Break Camps are coming up on February 15, March 18 and March 21–25. Additionally, the member presale for summer camps is January 4–31, 2016 so Members be sure to register now to get an additional 15% off of your existing member discount!

  1. Mindbender Mansion Traveling Exhibit

Mindbender Mansion engages visitors in playful problem solving with 40 individual brainteasers and 5 group challenger. Visit the mansion to join the “Mindbender Society” by gathering hidden clues scattered throughout the kitchen, map room, parlor, library and dining room! Coming May 18, 2016.

  1. OSC Preschool
    The Orlando Science Center Preschool model features an environment unmatched by any other preschool in Central Florida with developmentally appropriate learning space including hands-on activities and skill building centers and diverse and content-rich STEM experiences the Science Center has to offer.   1. Grand Opening of New KidsTown

Your favorite town is growing! New KidsTown will be three times larger than the current space and be relocated to the second floor. It will feature play-based learning and high-touch explorations to promote critical thinking skills for infants to children age seven and an even bigger, more comprehensive orange grove which will include a juicing station and produce stand! Opening late 2016!

  1. Neanderthal Ball

This annual fundraising gala will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2016! We invite you to step into the past to support the future at this extravagant event that benefits Orlando Science Center and its mission to inspire science learning for life.   1. Young Maker Workshops
    The Orlando Science Center’s Young Maker Workshop helps hone little maker skills! One weekend each month, we offer hands-on maker activities to guests so they can learn about tools, new skills, and start looking at the world in a different way! Check the Science Live!
